The Portuguese inactive yeast market rose rapidly to $X in 2021, growing by 13% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a perceptible contraction. Inactive yeast consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Overall, exports saw a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 340% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, inactive yeast exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 68% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Spain (X tons) was the main destination for inactive yeast exports from Portugal, accounting for a 46% share of total exports. Moreover, inactive yeast exports to Spain exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Italy (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by France (X tons), with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Spain amounted to -6.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+572.1% per year) and France (+214.5% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for inactive yeast exported from Portugal were Spain ($X), France ($X) and Italy ($X), with a combined 79% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Ireland, Angola, Poland and Luxembourg, which together accounted for a further 9.9%.

Luxembourg, with a CAGR of +646.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average inactive yeast export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 37% against the previous year. In general, the export price posted prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 290% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ireland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Over the period under review, imports posted moderate growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 70% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, inactive yeast imports dropped to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine-year period.
