Spain (X tons), France (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main destinations of wire and cable exports from Portugal, together accounting for 47% of total exports. The UK, Italy, Belgium, Poland, Romania, Angola, Hungary, Mozambique, Sweden and Ireland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Hungary (with a CAGR of +16.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, France ($X), Germany ($X) and Spain ($X) constituted the largest markets for wire and cable exported from Portugal worldwide, with a combined 46% share of total exports. The average wire and cable export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Ireland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of insulated wire and cable was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, wire and cable imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 35%.
