For the third consecutive year, Portugal recorded growth in supplies from abroad of lactose and lactose syrup, which increased by 26% to X tons in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +51.9% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 38%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, lactose imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +53.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 39%. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Spain (X tons), Denmark (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main suppliers of lactose imports to Portugal, together accounting for 85% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of +23.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest lactose suppliers to Portugal were the Netherlands ($X), Spain ($X) and Denmark ($X), with a combined 81% share of total imports.
Denmark, with a CAGR of +38.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
