In 2021, the Portuguese lamb and sheep meat market increased by 29% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, saw a slight decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 107%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, lamb and sheep meat exports rose markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 79% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

France (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main destinations of lamb and sheep meat exports from Portugal, together accounting for 56% of total exports. These countries were followed by Qatar, Italy, Oman, the United Arab Emirates and Angola, which together accounted for a further 33%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Qatar (with a CAGR of +190.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, France ($X), Egypt ($X) and Spain ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for lamb and sheep meat exported from Portugal worldwide, together accounting for 57% of total exports. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average export price increased by 38%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Oman (+9.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, overseas purchases of lamb and sheep meat were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 24%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, lamb and sheep meat imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Belgium (with a CAGR of +59.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Spain ($X), France ($X) and Greece ($X) constituted the largest lamb and sheep meat suppliers to Portugal, together accounting for 79% of total imports.
