In 2022, the Portuguese lift and hoist market decreased by -14.8% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -21.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Portugal
In 2022, shipments abroad of lifts and hoists was finally on the rise to reach X units after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 38% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, lift and hoist exports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 51%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Cyprus (X units), Angola (X units) and Algeria (X units) were the main destinations of lift and hoist exports from Portugal, with a combined 59% share of total exports. Bulgaria, Spain, Malta, Cabo Verde and Mozambique lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Malta (with a CAGR of +114.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for lift and hoist exported from Portugal were Cyprus ($X), Angola ($X) and Algeria ($X), together comprising 60% of total exports. Bulgaria, Spain, Malta, Cabo Verde and Mozambique lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.
Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +85.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average lift and hoist export price amounted to $X per unit, declining by -3.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the average export price increased by 18%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2016 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Malta ($X per unit) and Spain ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Mozambique ($X per unit) and Cabo Verde ($X per unit) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Cyprus (+0.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Portugal
After two years of growth, purchases abroad of lifts and hoists decreased by -4.6% to X units in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +84.0% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, lift and hoist imports reached $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Spain (X units) constituted the largest supplier of lift and hoist to Portugal, accounting for a 71% share of total imports. Moreover, lift and hoist imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Sweden (X units), sixfold. The Netherlands (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Spain stood at +6.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sweden (+16.9% per year) and the Netherlands (+20.5% per year).
In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of lifts and hoists to Portugal, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sweden ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 7.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Spain totaled +4.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sweden (+14.4% per year) and the Netherlands (+18.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average lift and hoist import price amounted to $X per unit, rising by 6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 8.8% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Germany ($X per unit) and the Netherlands ($X per unit), while the price for Sweden ($X per unit) and Spain ($X per unit) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (-2.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
