Lime Market Size in Portugal

In 2021, the Portuguese lime market decreased by -7.8% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 6.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of lime decreased by -5.2% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 99%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, lime exports rose sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 78% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Spain (X tons), Finland (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) were the main destinations of lime exports from Portugal, together accounting for 78% of total exports. Ghana, the UK, Guinea and Angola lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Guinea (with a CAGR of +80.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for lime exported from Portugal were South Africa ($X), Spain ($X) and Finland ($X), with a combined 71% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Ghana, the UK, Guinea and Angola, which together accounted for a further 22%.

Among the main countries of destination, Guinea, with a CAGR of +81.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average lime export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 16%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Guinea ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Finland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Angola (+4.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of lime decreased by -40.4% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 167% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, lime imports shrank significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 153% against the previous year. In 2021, Spain (X tons) was the main supplier of lime to Portugal, accounting for a 95% share of total imports. Moreover, lime imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X tons), more than tenfold.

In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of lime to Portugal, comprising 89% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 4.6% share of total imports.
