Malt Market Size in Portugal
For the sixth consecutive year, the Portuguese malt market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 15% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, saw a perceptible decline. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, shipments abroad of malt decreased by -36.8% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after five years of growth. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, malt exports contracted remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 252%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Angola (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) were the main destinations of malt exports from Portugal, with a combined 79% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Angola (with a CAGR of +246.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for malt exported from Portugal were Angola ($X), South Africa ($X) and Nigeria ($X), together comprising 79% of total exports.
Angola, with a CAGR of +259.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average malt export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 20% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+87.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Portugal
In 2022, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of malt, when their volume decreased by -11.6% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports faced a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 36%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, malt imports stood at $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 31%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Spain (X tons) was the main malt supplier to Portugal, with a 95% share of total imports. It was followed by the UK (X tons), with a 1.6% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Spain stood at -4.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (-7.0% per year) and Germany (-46.0% per year).
In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of malt to Portugal, comprising 93% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the UK ($X), with a 2.4% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Spain stood at +1.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (-1.9% per year) and Germany (-39.6% per year).

In 2022, the average malt import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 24% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +5.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average import price increased by 25%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
