Mango And Mangosteen Market Size in Portugal

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the Portuguese mango and mangosteen market, when its value decreased by -9.4% to $X. Overall, the total consumption indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +3.1% against 2018 indices. In 2022, approx. X tons of mangoes, mangosteens and guavas were exported from Portugal; dropping by -16.1% against the year before. In general, exports, however, recorded resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, mango and mangosteen exports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 73% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Spain (X tons) was the main destination for mango and mangosteen exports from Portugal, with a 59% share of total exports. Moreover, mango and mangosteen exports to Spain exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Netherlands (X tons), fourfold. Poland (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Spain amounted to +18.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+3.2% per year) and Poland (+5.4% per year).

In value terms, Spain ($X) remains the key foreign market for mangoes, mangosteens and guavas exports from Portugal, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Poland ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Spain totaled +17.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (+3.6% per year) and the Netherlands (+2.7% per year).

The average mango and mangosteen export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 3.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a slight contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 14%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+7.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, purchases abroad of mangoes, mangosteens and guavas decreased by -6.4% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 25%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, mango and mangosteen imports declined markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 24%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

Imports by Country

Spain (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main suppliers of mango and mangosteen imports to Portugal, together accounting for 95% of total imports. These countries were followed by Germany, which accounted for a further 4%.
