In 2021, the Portuguese soft drink market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, overseas shipments of soft drinks increased by 46% to X litres, rising for the fifth year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports continue to indicate buoyant growth. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, soft drink exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +98.6% against 2017 indices. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Spain (X litres) was the main destination for soft drink exports from Portugal, accounting for a 58% share of total exports. Moreover, soft drink exports to Spain exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Belgium (X litres), ninefold. Senegal (X litres) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Spain stood at +19.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belgium (+40.0% per year) and Senegal (+73.9% per year).
In value terms, Spain ($X) remains the key foreign market for soft drink exports from Portugal, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($X), with a 5.3% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 4.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Spain stood at +10.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belgium (+34.7% per year) and France (+4.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average soft drink export price stood at $X per litre in 2021, increasing by 4.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a noticeable descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 7.4%. The export price peaked at $X per litre in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Angola (+2.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, overseas purchases of soft drinks increased by 5.9% to X litres, rising for the fourth year in a row after five years of decline. In general, total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +60.5% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
In value terms, soft drink imports rose markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Spain (X litres) was the main soft drink supplier to Portugal, with a 90% share of total imports. Moreover, soft drink imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X litres), more than tenfold. Germany (X litres) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Spain stood at +2.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+14.6% per year) and Germany (+7.9% per year).
In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of soft drink to Portugal, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 5.3% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 5.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Spain was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+3.2% per year) and France (+14.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average soft drink import price stood at $X per litre in 2021, surging by 7.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a pronounced downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per litre in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per litre), while the price for Spain ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+0.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
