In value terms, nucleic acid exports declined sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 247%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

Spain (X tons) was the main destination for nucleic acid exports from Portugal, accounting for a 72% share of total exports. Moreover, nucleic acid exports to Spain exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Japan (X tons), sevenfold. Switzerland (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 8.6% share.

Imports into Portugal
In 2021, imports of nucleic acids and their salts into Portugal skyrocketed to X tons, picking up by 16% against the year before. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +61.7% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 30%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
In value terms, nucleic acid imports contracted to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 115% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of nucleic acid to Portugal, with a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, nucleic acid imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), fourfold. The UK (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 4.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Spain stood at +6.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+9.5% per year) and the UK (+30.6% per year).
In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of nucleic acids and their salts to Portugal, comprising 27% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Spain amounted to +23.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+43.8% per year) and China (+21.7% per year).

In 2021, the average nucleic acid import price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -20.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, posted resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 66% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
