Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, nucleic acid exports declined sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 247%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

Spain (X tons) was the main destination for nucleic acid exports from Portugal, accounting for a 72% share of total exports. Moreover, nucleic acid exports to Spain exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Japan (X tons), sevenfold. Switzerland (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 8.6% share.

Over the period under review, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +61.7% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 30%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, nucleic acid imports contracted to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 115% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

In 2021, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of nucleic acid to Portugal, with a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, nucleic acid imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), fourfold. The UK (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 4.8% share.
