Angola (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Cabo Verde (X tons) were the main destinations of ophthalmic instruments exports from Portugal, with a combined 77% share of total exports. In general, total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, ophthalmic instruments imports amounted to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Belgium (X tons), Spain (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main suppliers of ophthalmic instruments imports to Portugal, with a combined 80% share of total imports. Germany, the United States, the Netherlands and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.
