Crude Palm Oil Market Size in Portugal
For the third consecutive year, the Portuguese crude palm oil market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 21% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption, however, enjoyed a remarkable increase. Crude palm oil consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Portugal
Crude palm oil exports from Portugal declined rapidly to X tons in 2022, falling by -24.5% compared with the year before. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 2,959% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, crude palm oil exports contracted notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 369% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then contracted markedly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Spain (X tons) was the main destination for crude palm oil exports from Portugal, with a 100% share of total exports. It was followed by Angola (X kg), with less than 0.1% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Spain amounted to +172.4%.
In value terms, Spain ($X) remains the key foreign market for crude palm oil exports from Portugal, comprising 100% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Angola ($X), with less than 0.1% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Spain amounted to +224.5%.
Export Prices by Country
The average crude palm oil export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 4.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 167%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Spain totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+19.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Crude Palm Oil Imports
Imports into Portugal
In 2022, supplies from abroad of crude palm oil decreased by -1.9% to X tons, falling for the fourth consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 103%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, crude palm oil imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 91% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Sierra Leone (X tons) constituted the largest crude palm oil supplier to Portugal, accounting for a 52% share of total imports. Moreover, crude palm oil imports from Sierra Leone exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Sao Tome and Principe (X tons), threefold. Guinea (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Sierra Leone amounted to +79.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sao Tome and Principe (-7.5% per year) and Guinea (+57.1% per year).
In value terms, Sierra Leone ($X) constituted the largest supplier of crude palm oil to Portugal, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sao Tome and Principe ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Guinea, with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Sierra Leone stood at +93.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sao Tome and Principe (+32.0% per year) and Guinea (+83.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average crude palm oil import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 38% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a slight expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sao Tome and Principe (+42.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
