Overall, exports enjoyed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 349%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, drawing chalk exports declined to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a tangible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 244%. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Cabo Verde (X units) was the main destination for drawing chalk exports from Portugal, with a 51% share of total exports. Moreover, drawing chalk exports to Cabo Verde exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Sao Tome and Principe (X units), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Chile (X units), with a 7.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Cabo Verde stood at +38.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sao Tome and Principe (+18.3% per year) and Chile (+287.2% per year).

In value terms, Cabo Verde ($X) remains the key foreign market for pastels, drawing charcoals, writing or drawing chalks exports from Portugal, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sao Tome and Principe ($X), with a 7.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Angola, with a 5.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Cabo Verde totaled +30.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sao Tome and Principe (+9.7% per year) and Angola (-25.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average drawing chalk export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, dropping by -18.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a pronounced setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the average export price increased by 99% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Austria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Portugal

In 2021, drawing chalk imports into Portugal skyrocketed to X units, jumping by 67% compared with 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports showed moderate growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 154%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, drawing chalk imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -1.1% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 41%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X units) constituted the largest supplier of drawing chalk to Portugal, accounting for a 51% share of total imports. Moreover, drawing chalk imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X units), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by France (X units), with a 6.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to +16.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+4.0% per year) and France (-2.3% per year).

In value terms, the largest drawing chalk suppliers to Portugal were Spain ($X), Germany ($X) and China ($X), together accounting for 81% of total imports. These countries were followed by France, the Netherlands and the UK, which together accounted for a further 13%.

Among the main suppliers, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +28.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average drawing chalk import price stood at $X per unit in 2021, falling by -16.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a slight decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 28% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per unit), while the price for the Netherlands ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
