Perfume exports from Portugal soared to X tons in 2022, picking up by 33% against the previous year's figure. In general, exports continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 58% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, perfume exports rose slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +59.8% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 32%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

Spain (X tons), France (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main destinations of perfume exports from Portugal, with a combined 74% share of total exports. Angola, Cabo Verde, Lebanon and Guinea-Bissau lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 18%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Lebanon (with a CAGR of +77.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Spain ($X) remains the key foreign market for perfumes and toilet waters exports from Portugal, comprising 44% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Spain totaled -2.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+7.5% per year) and France (+27.8% per year).

The average perfume export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -23.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 45% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Lebanon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Guinea-Bissau (+1.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2022, overseas purchases of perfumes and toilet waters increased by 29% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +47.1% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, perfume imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +80.9% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest perfume supplier to Portugal, accounting for a 62% share of total imports. Moreover, perfume imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X tons), fivefold. France (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Spain totaled +8.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+20.2% per year) and France (+1.5% per year).
In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of perfumes and toilet waters to Portugal, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with an 8.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Spain totaled +8.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (-0.1% per year) and the Netherlands (+29.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average perfume import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 9.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+7.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
