After three years of growth, the Portuguese cement pipe market decreased by -13.1% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. Cement pipe consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In 2022, shipments abroad of pipes and other articles of cement increased by 18% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 119%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cement pipe exports rose sharply to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a noticeable descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 50% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Spain (X tons) was the main destination for cement pipe exports from Portugal, with a 70% share of total exports. Moreover, cement pipe exports to Spain exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (X tons), sixfold. France (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Spain totaled +12.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+84.0% per year) and France (-15.2% per year).

In value terms, Spain ($X), the United States ($X) and France ($X) were the largest markets for cement pipe exported from Portugal worldwide, with a combined 85% share of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, the United States, with a CAGR of +79.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

The average cement pipe export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -10.9% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cement pipe export price decreased by -15.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average export price increased by 67%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+27.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Portugal

For the fifth year in a row, Portugal recorded growth in supplies from abroad of pipes and other articles of cement, which increased by 27% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 77% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, cement pipe imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 130% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest cement pipe supplier to Portugal, accounting for a 81% share of total imports. Moreover, cement pipe imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), sevenfold. The Netherlands (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Spain stood at +15.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+31.8% per year) and the Netherlands (+78.5% per year).

In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of pipes and other articles of cement to Portugal, comprising 83% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 9.7% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 2.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Spain amounted to +17.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+39.7% per year) and the Netherlands (+85.8% per year).

In 2022, the average cement pipe import price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -7.7% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 41%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Spain ($X per ton) and the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) and the UK ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
