Overall, exports showed a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 23%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, exports of plastic plates, sheets, film, foil and strip surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +17.5% against 2018 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Spain (X tons), France (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main destinations of exports of plastic plates, sheets, film, foil and strip from Portugal, together accounting for 69% of total exports. Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the United States (with a CAGR of +63.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +3.8% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 22% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Overall, total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +5.0% against 2018 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest plastic plate, sheet, film, foil and strip supplier to Portugal, accounting for a 41% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of plastic plates, sheets, film, foil and strip from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tons), fivefold. Belgium (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Spain stood at +3.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+6.5% per year) and Belgium (+7.7% per year).

In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of plastic plates, sheets, film, foil and strip to Portugal, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Belgium, with a 9.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Spain amounted to +3.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+3.3% per year) and Belgium (+6.9% per year).

In 2021, the average import price for plastic plates, sheets, film, foil and strip amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 16% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
