Potato Market Size in Portugal

For the third consecutive year, the Portuguese potato market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -0.6% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Potato Production in Portugal

In value terms, potato production expanded rapidly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 70% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

The average yield of potatoes in Portugal totaled X tons per ha in 2021, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, potato exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 89%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Spain (X tons) was the main destination for potato exports from Portugal, with a 49% share of total exports. Moreover, potato exports to Spain exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, France (X tons), twofold. The average potato export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 27%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, potato imports into Portugal declined to X tons, with a decrease of -1.8% against the previous year's figure. Overall, imports showed a mild curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 32%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, potato imports fell slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 57%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
