In 2022, overseas purchases of primary cells and batteries increased by 9.9% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +41.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
In value terms, primary cell and battery imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +20.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 28%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then fell in the following year.

Germany (X units), Spain (X units) and Belgium (X units) were the main suppliers of primary cell and battery imports to Portugal, together accounting for 81% of total imports. China, the Netherlands and Slovakia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Slovakia (with a CAGR of +138.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average import price increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per unit), while the price for Belgium ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
