Printing Press Market Size in Portugal

The Portuguese printing press market shrank significantly to $X in 2022, which is down by -21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption saw a drastic downturn. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, overseas shipments of printing presses were finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, printing press exports fell slightly to $X in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +9.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 51%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Angola (X units) was the main destination for printing press exports from Portugal, accounting for a 30% share of total exports. Moreover, printing press exports to Angola exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Spain (X units), threefold. The United States (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Angola totaled +22.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Spain (-4.1% per year) and the United States (+20.6% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for printing presses exports from Portugal, comprising 23% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with an 8.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Pakistan, with a 5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United States stood at +33.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (+7.2% per year) and Pakistan (+32.5% per year).

In 2022, the average printing press export price amounted to $X per unit, falling by -22.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, posted prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average export price increased by 188%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Mozambique ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of printing presses was finally on the rise to reach X units after two years of decline. In general, total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -3.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X units in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, printing press imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a modest expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 69% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

The UK (X units), Germany (X units) and China (X units) were the main suppliers of printing press imports to Portugal, together comprising 64% of total imports.
