In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the Portuguese sulphonamides market, when its value decreased by -30.2% to $X. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 2,984%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Switzerland (X tons) was the main destination for sulphonamides exports from Portugal, with a 70% share of total exports. Moreover, sulphonamides exports to Switzerland exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (X kg), fourfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Switzerland amounted to +151.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+8.9% per year) and France (-14.6% per year).

In value terms, Switzerland ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for sulphonamides exports from Portugal, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with a 2.8% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Switzerland amounted to +150.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+17.8% per year) and France (+71.5% per year).

In 2021, the average sulphonamides export price amounted to $X per kg, picking up by 681% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a significant expansion. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per kg), while the average price for exports to France ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.

From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sulphonamides imports fell notably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 427%. Imports peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest sulphonamides supplier to Portugal, accounting for a 43% share of total imports. Moreover, sulphonamides imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Belgium (X tons), threefold. India (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at +1.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (+17.6% per year) and India (+32.7% per year).

In value terms, the largest sulphonamides suppliers to Portugal were India ($X), China ($X) and Ireland ($X), together comprising 59% of total imports. These countries were followed by Taiwan (Chinese), Germany, Malta, Spain, the Netherlands and Belgium, which together accounted for a further 18%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Malta, with a CAGR of +714.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average sulphonamides import price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -4.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average import price increased by 108% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+22.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
