Tomato Market Size in Portugal

In 2021, after seven years of growth, there was significant decline in the Portuguese tomato market, when its value decreased by -7.2% to $X. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a resilient expansion. Tomato consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

Tomato Production in Portugal

In value terms, tomato production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production showed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

In 2021, the average yield of tomatoes in Portugal expanded slightly to X tons per ha, picking up by 1.8% against the previous year's figure. Overall, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the yield increased by 22% against the previous year. In value terms, tomato exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total exports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Spain (X tons) was the main destination for tomato exports from Portugal, accounting for a 93% share of total exports. Moreover, tomato exports to Spain exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Netherlands (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Spain was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+22.0% per year) and France (-10.1% per year).

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -25.7% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 32%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Over the period under review, total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -1.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 23%. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of tomato to Portugal, accounting for a 85% share of total imports. Moreover, tomato imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X tons), more than tenfold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Spain stood at +2.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+45.4% per year) and Germany (+45.1% per year).

In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of tomato to Portugal, comprising 77% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with an 8.3% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with an 8.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Spain stood at +3.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+50.8% per year) and the Netherlands (+57.1% per year).
