In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the Portuguese unvulcanised rubber market, when its value increased by 28% to $X. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine-year period. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, unvulcanised rubber exports fell sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 440%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

France (X tons), Poland (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main destinations of unvulcanised rubber exports from Portugal, together accounting for 85% of total exports. These countries were followed by the Czech Republic, Finland and Germany, which together accounted for a further 13%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Finland (with a CAGR of +89.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, France ($X), Poland ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for unvulcanised rubber exported from Portugal worldwide, with a combined 88% share of total exports. China, Finland and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 9.7%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Finland, with a CAGR of +96.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average unvulcanised rubber export price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 16% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 39%. The export price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest unvulcanised rubber supplier to Portugal, with a 64% share of total imports. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Spain amounted to +8.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+41.1% per year) and Germany (-21.6% per year).

In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of unvulcanised rubber to Portugal, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Spain stood at +6.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+6.0% per year) and Germany (-24.3% per year).
