Wallpaper Market Size in Portugal

The Portuguese wallpaper market reduced dramatically to $X in 2021, falling by -16.4% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Overall, consumption, however, recorded a resilient increase. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, shipments abroad of wallpaper and wall coverings increased by 5.7% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 74% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wallpaper exports rose modestly to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 68%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Spain (X tons) was the main destination for wallpaper exports from Portugal, with a 45% share of total exports. Moreover, wallpaper exports to Spain exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Angola (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Mozambique (X tons), with a 9.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Spain totaled +23.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Angola (-9.2% per year) and Mozambique (+1.7% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for wallpaper exported from Portugal were Angola ($X), Spain ($X) and Mozambique ($X), together comprising 65% of total exports. These countries were followed by the United States, Qatar, France, Algeria, Brazil, Hungary, Croatia and Guinea, which together accounted for a further 18%.

Qatar, with a CAGR of +75.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average wallpaper export price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -3.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 35% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Guinea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (+23.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Portugal

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of wallpaper and wall coverings, when their volume decreased by -8.8% to X tons. In general, imports, however, saw a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 85%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wallpaper imports reduced rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -27.8% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

India (X tons), Spain (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of wallpaper imports to Portugal, with a combined 50% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for India (with a CAGR of +210.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Spain ($X), France ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) appeared to be the largest wallpaper suppliers to Portugal, with a combined 47% share of total imports. Italy, Germany, Belgium, the UK, India, China and Japan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 47%.

India, with a CAGR of +181.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average wallpaper import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -9.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 17%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+9.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
