Walnut Market Size in Portugal

The Portuguese walnut market amounted to $X in 2021, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Walnut consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 126% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Spain (X tons) was the main destination for walnut exports from Portugal, accounting for a 67% share of total exports. Moreover, walnut exports to Spain exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Italy (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Germany (X tons), with a 7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Spain stood at +26.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+29.2% per year) and Germany (+82.8% per year).

In value terms, Spain ($X) remains the key foreign market for walnut exports from Portugal, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 7.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Spain totaled +30.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+41.8% per year) and Germany (+78.7% per year).

The average walnut export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 35% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 66% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 33% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, walnut imports reduced to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Spain (X tons), France (X tons) and Chile (X tons) were the main suppliers of walnut imports to Portugal, together accounting for 92% of total imports. Argentina and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 6.2%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Argentina (with a CAGR of +658.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, Spain ($X), France ($X) and Chile ($X) appeared to be the largest walnut suppliers to Portugal, together accounting for 91% of total imports. These countries were followed by Argentina and Germany, which together accounted for a further 7.1%.
