Watermelon Market Size in Portugal

The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, watermelon exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 362%. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Poland (X tons) was the main destination for watermelon exports from Portugal, accounting for a 67% share of total exports. Moreover, watermelon exports to Poland exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Spain (X tons), fourfold. Cabo Verde (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Poland totaled +36.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Spain (-2.0% per year) and Cabo Verde (+23.1% per year).

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the key foreign market for watermelons exports from Portugal, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Cabo Verde, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Poland stood at +32.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Spain (+3.2% per year) and Cabo Verde (+31.0% per year).

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 62%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
