Wood Pellets Market Size in Portugal

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the Portuguese wood pellets market, when its value increased by 9.3% to $X. In general, consumption posted buoyant growth. Wood pellets consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wood pellets exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. The UK (X tons), Denmark (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main destinations of wood pellets exports from Portugal, together accounting for 79% of total exports. France, Belgium, Italy and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 87%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wood pellets imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed mild growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 131% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest wood pellets supplier to Portugal, with a 86% share of total imports. Moreover, wood pellets imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Brazil (X tons), with a 2.5% share.
