In general, the total production indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -3.5% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 47%. Production of peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates decreased by -8.4% to X cubic meters, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports continue to indicate a slight decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 34%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X cubic meters. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports of remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, exports of wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates contracted modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 38%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports of failed to regain momentum.

The UK (X cubic meters), Spain (X cubic meters) and Denmark (X cubic meters) were the main destinations of exports of wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates from Portugal, together comprising 77% of total exports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and France, which together accounted for a further 21%.

Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 8.7% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Spain ($X per cubic meter) and Germany ($X per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to the UK ($X per cubic meter) and Belgium ($X per cubic meter) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+5.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Portugal
In 2021, purchases abroad of wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates increased by 80% to X cubic meters, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Overall, imports continue to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 128% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X cubic meters in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, imports of wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 88%. Over the period under review, imports of attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Spain (X cubic meters) constituted the largest supplier of wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates to Portugal, with a 85% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X cubic meters), eightfold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Spain stood at +11.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+49.8% per year) and France (+78.2% per year).
In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates to Portugal, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with an 11% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Spain amounted to +10.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+36.9% per year) and France (+31.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average import price for wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates amounted to $X per thousand cubic meters, which is down by -3.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 49% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per thousand cubic meters. From 2020 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per thousand cubic meters), while the price for Spain ($X per thousand cubic meters) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (-0.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
