Cassava Market Size in Puerto Rico

The Puerto Rican cassava market skyrocketed to $X in 2021, jumping by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a deep contraction. Puerto Rico consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Cassava Production in Puerto Rico

In value terms, cassava production surged to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 120% against the previous year. Puerto Rico production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

The average yield of cassava in Puerto Rico rose modestly to X tons per ha in 2021, with an increase of 2.3% on the year before. Overall, the yield, however, showed a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the yield increased by 117%. The global yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the total area harvested in terms of cassava production in Puerto Rico stood at X ha, remaining relatively unchanged against 2020 figures. Overall, the harvested area saw a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the harvested area increased by 84% against the previous year. The global harvested area peaked at X ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Thailand represented the largest exporter of cassava in the world, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 83% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X tons), committing an 11% share of total exports. The following exporters - Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) and Costa Rica (X tons) - together made up 4.8% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to cassava exports from Thailand stood at +1.4%. At the same time, Lao People's Democratic Republic (+42.4%) and Costa Rica (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lao People's Democratic Republic emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +42.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Vietnam (-12.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Thailand (+18 p.p.) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+2.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2021, the share of Vietnam (-21.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest cassava supplier from Puerto Rico, comprising 66% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X), with a 14% share of global exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 9.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Thailand amounted to +1.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Lao People's Democratic Republic (+53.8% per year) and Vietnam (-11.4% per year).

China was the key importer of cassava in the world, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 62% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), making up a 32% share of total imports. South Korea (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +14.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cassava into Puerto Rico, comprising 68% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with a 19% share of global imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China totaled -1.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Thailand (+18.6% per year) and South Korea (-7.1% per year).
