Ginger Market Size in Puerto Rico

In 2021, the Puerto Rican ginger market decreased by -7.6% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, the total consumption indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +32.4% against 2017 indices. India (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Peru (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 38% share of total exports. Brazil (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to ginger exports from China stood at +5.2%. At the same time, Peru (+41.3%), Brazil (+28.2%), India (+20.5%), the Netherlands (+13.0%) and Thailand (+9.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Peru emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +41.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Nigeria (-9.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. India (+11 p.p.), Peru (+5.6 p.p.), Brazil (+3.5 p.p.) and the Netherlands (+2.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while Nigeria and China saw its share reduced by -6.5% and -14% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest ginger supplier from Puerto Rico, comprising 45% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 14% share of global exports. It was followed by India, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in China amounted to +9.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Netherlands (+19.1% per year) and India (+13.1% per year).

The countries with the highest levels of ginger imports in 2021 were Bangladesh (X tons), the United States (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Pakistan (X tons), together reaching 44% of total import. Japan (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Malaysia (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 15% share of total imports. Germany (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), the UK (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Canada (X tons) and India (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Bangladesh (with a CAGR of +15.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), the United States ($X) and Japan ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 31% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +20.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
