Paddy Rice Market Size in Puerto Rico

The Puerto Rican paddy rice market declined modestly to $X in 2021, which is down by -3.6% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, posted a strong increase. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, paddy rice production fell modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 59%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the average paddy rice yield in Puerto Rico was estimated at X tons per ha, approximately mirroring the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the yield increased by 32%. The global yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the harvested area of paddy rice in Puerto Rico contracted slightly to X ha, which is down by -3.5% compared with 2020. In general, the harvested area, however, saw a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the harvested area increased by 32% against the previous year. The global harvested area peaked at X ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

The United States was the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 50% of total exports. India (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 23% share, followed by Brazil (7.8%). The following exporters - Uruguay (X tons), Paraguay (X tons), Guyana (X tons) and Russia (X tons) - together made up 9.4% of total exports.

The United States experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of paddy rice. At the same time, India (+11.9%), Brazil (+6.4%), Paraguay (+5.8%) and Uruguay (+3.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +11.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Guyana (-9.4%) and Russia (-14.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of India (+14 p.p.) and Brazil (+2.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2021, the share of Guyana (-2.7 p.p.), Russia (-5.2 p.p.) and the United States (-8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the largest paddy rice supplier from Puerto Rico, comprising 46% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 19% share of global exports. It was followed by Brazil, with a 6.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in the United States totaled -1.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (+10.5% per year) and Brazil (+5.4% per year).

In 2021, Nepal (X tons) and Mexico (X tons) represented the key importers of paddy ricein the world, together accounting for near 44% of total imports. Venezuela (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Costa Rica (4.6%) and Honduras (4.6%). Colombia (X tons), Nicaragua (X tons), Guatemala (X tons), the Philippines (X tons), Brazil (X tons), El Salvador (X tons), Libya (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in the Philippines (with a CAGR of +43.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Mexico ($X), Nepal ($X) and Venezuela ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 46% share of total imports. The Philippines, Honduras, Colombia, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Turkey, Brazil, El Salvador and Libya lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.

In terms of the main importing countries, the Philippines, with a CAGR of +23.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
