Papaya Market Size in Puerto Rico

The Puerto Rican papaya market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. In general, the total consumption indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -12.7% against 2018 indices. Puerto Rico consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Papaya Production in Puerto Rico

In value terms, papaya production rose to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, the total production indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -14.6% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the production volume increased by 38%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the average yield of papayas in Puerto Rico totaled X tons per ha, standing approx. at the year before. In general, the yield, however, showed a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the yield increased by 9.5% against the previous year. The global yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the papaya harvested area in Puerto Rico fell to X ha, remaining constant against 2020. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the harvested area increased by 34%. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the papaya harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Mexico was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 47% of total exports. Brazil (X tons) took a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Guatemala (12%). The United States (X tons), Sri Lanka (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), China (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Spain (X tons) and India (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to papaya exports from Mexico stood at +6.0%. At the same time, Sri Lanka (+20.3%), Spain (+18.1%), China (+10.0%), Guatemala (+8.9%), Brazil (+7.5%), the United States (+3.4%) and the Netherlands (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sri Lanka emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +20.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Malaysia (-4.5%) and India (-8.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mexico (+4 p.p.), Guatemala (+3.4 p.p.), Sri Lanka (+2.9 p.p.) and Brazil (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while India and Malaysia saw its share reduced by -4.6% and -4.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) remains the largest papaya supplier from Puerto Rico, comprising 34% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brazil ($X), with a 15% share of global exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with an 8.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Mexico totaled +6.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Brazil (+3.8% per year) and the Netherlands (+4.4% per year).

The United States dominates imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 58% of total imports in 2021. Canada (X tons) took a 6.3% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by El Salvador (4.7%). Germany (X tons), Portugal (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Spain (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and the UK (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to papaya imports into the United States stood at +3.8%. At the same time, South Africa (+40.3%), Portugal (+10.6%), Germany (+8.2%), El Salvador (+6.0%), Spain (+5.3%), the United Arab Emirates (+5.1%), Canada (+4.2%) and the Netherlands (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Africa emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +40.3% from 2012-2021. The UK experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa increased by +2.4 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United States ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported papayas into Puerto Rico, comprising 33% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 10% share of global imports. It was followed by Portugal, with a 7.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in the United States stood at +3.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (+7.4% per year) and Portugal (+11.1% per year).
