The Puerto Rican plastic packaging market declined modestly to $X in 2021, almost unchanged from the previous year. In 2021, China (X tons), distantly followed by Mexico (X tons), the United States (X tons) and Germany (X tons) represented the main exporters of plastic packaging, together comprising 37% of total exports. Poland (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Thailand (X tons), India (X tons), France (X tons), Canada (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Vietnam (+10.2%), Turkey (+9.3%), Poland (+8.5%), the Netherlands (+6.7%), India (+6.3%), Belgium (+3.7%), Mexico (+2.9%), Germany (+2.8%), the United States (+2.8%), Thailand (+2.0%) and France (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +10.2% from 2012-2021. Canada experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Vietnam and Poland increased by +1.8 and +1.6 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest plastic packaging supplier from Puerto Rico, comprising 21% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with an 8% share of global exports. It was followed by the United States, with a 7.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in China amounted to +6.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+2.7% per year) and the United States (+2.0% per year).

In 2021, the export price in Puerto Rico amounted to less than $X per ton, stabilizing at the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Bolivia (with a CAGR of +46.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported plastic packaging into Puerto Rico, comprising 14% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 6.8% share of global imports. It was followed by France, with a 5.5% share.

In the United States, plastic packaging imports increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (+2.6% per year) and France (+2.6% per year).
