Yams Market Size in Puerto Rico

The Puerto Rican yams market totaled $X in 2021, approximately reflecting the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed a pronounced setback. Puerto Rico consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The United States (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Jamaica (X tons), Colombia (X tons), China (X tons), Costa Rica (X tons), India (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Japan (X tons). All these countries together took near 59% share of total exports.

Exports from Ghana increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Brazil (+67.6%), Colombia (+19.5%), India (+11.5%), China (+8.0%), Japan (+5.2%), Jamaica (+4.4%) and the United States (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Brazil emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +67.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Costa Rica (-6.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of India (+6.1 p.p.), Colombia (+4.9 p.p.) and Brazil (+4.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2021, the share of Jamaica (-2.4 p.p.), the United States (-2.8 p.p.) and Costa Rica (-16.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Ghana ($X), Jamaica ($X) and the United States ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 52% of total exports. These countries were followed by China, Japan, Costa Rica, Colombia, Brazil and India, which together accounted for a further 37%.

Brazil, with a CAGR of +64.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the United States (X tons), distantly followed by China (X tons), Canada (X tons) and the UK (X tons) were the largest importers of yams, together creating 67% of total imports. The following importers - the Netherlands (X tons), Belgium (X tons), France (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Singapore (X tons) - together made up 24% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by South Africa (with a CAGR of +42.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported yams into Puerto Rico, comprising 40% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Canada ($X), with an 18% share of global imports. It was followed by the UK, with a 6.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in the United States totaled +3.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Canada (+8.4% per year) and the UK (+2.4% per year).
