Chestnut Market Size in Qatar

The Qatari chestnut market shrank rapidly to $X in 2021, which is down by -44.1% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Overall, consumption, however, recorded significant growth. Chestnut consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Chestnut imports into Qatar plummeted to X tons in 2021, which is down by -40.1% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 1,139% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chestnut imports fell dramatically to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, posted significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 208%. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, China (X tons) was the main chestnut supplier to Qatar, accounting for a 95% share of total imports. Moreover, chestnut imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Turkey (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled +17.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (-78.4% per year) and Lebanon (-22.2% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of chestnut to Qatar, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Lebanon ($X), with a 30% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China totaled +19.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Lebanon (+0.6% per year) and Turkey (-72.3% per year).

In 2021, the average chestnut import price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -6.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 163% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Lebanon ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+41.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
