Durum Wheat Market Size in Qatar

In 2022, the Qatari durum wheat market increased by 6.8% to $X, rising for the fifth consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a mild contraction. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Durum Wheat Production in Qatar

In value terms, durum wheat production declined remarkably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a precipitous descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 158% against the previous year. Durum wheat production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The average yield of durum wheat in Qatar fell slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, waning by -3.5% against 2021 figures. In general, the yield saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the yield increased by 403%. The durum wheat yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of durum wheat production in Qatar reduced remarkably to X ha, which is down by -47.7% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the harvested area increased by 2,080% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

In 2022, purchases abroad of durum wheat was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 134% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, durum wheat imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 165% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Oman (X tons) was the main durum wheat supplier to Qatar, with a 96% share of total imports. It was followed by the United States (X tons), with a 1.9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Oman was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+106.1% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-53.6% per year).

In value terms, Oman ($X) constituted the largest supplier of durum wheat to Qatar, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with a 9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Oman was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+18.3% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-41.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average durum wheat import price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 36% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a temperate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 242%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while the price for Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ukraine (+83.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
