In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of sugar crops production in Qatar totaled X ha, therefore, remained relatively stable against the year before. In 2022, supplies from abroad of sugar crops decreased by X% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by X%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, sugar crop imports declined significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of X%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted markedly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, India (X tons) constituted the largest sugar crop supplier to Qatar, with a X% share of total imports. Moreover, sugar crop imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Pakistan (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Philippines (X tons), with a X% share.
From 2013 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from India stood at X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Pakistan (X% per year) and the Philippines (X% per year).
In value terms, India ($X), Pakistan ($X) and the Philippines ($X) were the largest sugar crop suppliers to Qatar, with a combined X% share of total imports.
Among the main suppliers, the Philippines, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average sugar crop import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average import price increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (X%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
