Wood Fuel Market Size in Qatar

In 2022, the Qatari wood fuel market decreased by -28.1% to $X, falling for the fourth consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a slight increase. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wood fuel production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, the total production indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -0.6% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 81%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

For the seventh consecutive year, Qatar recorded decline in purchases abroad of wood fuel, which decreased by -60.9% to X cubic meters in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 465% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X cubic meters in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wood fuel imports reduced dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 458%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Indonesia (X cubic meters) constituted the largest supplier of wood fuel to Qatar, accounting for a 42% share of total imports. Moreover, wood fuel imports from Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Africa (X cubic meters), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Spain (X cubic meters), with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Indonesia totaled +17.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (-3.9% per year) and Spain (-1.2% per year).

In value terms, Indonesia ($X), South Africa ($X) and Estonia ($X) appeared to be the largest wood fuel suppliers to Qatar, together comprising 66% of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Estonia, with a CAGR of +19.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average wood fuel import price amounted to $X per cubic meter, picking up by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible downturn. The import price peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Estonia ($X per cubic meter), while the price for Indonesia ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+12.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
