Exports from Republic of Korea

In 2022, approx. X tons of anhydrous ammonia were exported from South Korea; jumping by 64% against the year before. Overall, exports, however, saw a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 128% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, ammonia exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 72%. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Japan (X tons) was the main destination for ammonia exports from South Korea, with a 90% share of total exports. Moreover, ammonia exports to Japan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, China (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Japan totaled -15.0%.

In value terms, Japan ($X) and China ($X) constituted the largest markets for ammonia exported from South Korea worldwide.

China, with a CAGR of -9.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review.

Export Prices by Country

The average ammonia export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 96% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Japan totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (-2.1%).

Ammonia Imports

Imports into Republic of Korea

Ammonia imports into South Korea contracted markedly to X tons in 2022, which is down by -20.7% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +61.3% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 77% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

In value terms, ammonia imports reduced rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate temperate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 125%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

Indonesia (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) were the main suppliers of ammonia imports to South Korea, together accounting for 82% of total imports. These countries were followed by Australia, Malaysia, the United States and Oman, which together accounted for a further 18%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the United States (with a CAGR of +182.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of anhydrous ammonia to South Korea, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 25% share of total imports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 6.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Indonesia totaled +14.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Saudi Arabia (-0.6% per year) and Malaysia (+15.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average ammonia import price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a mild contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 69%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while the price for the United States ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Trinidad and Tobago (+7.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
