Japan (X tons) was the main destination for asparagus exports from South Korea, with a 96% share of total exports. It was followed by Hong Kong SAR (X kg), with a 2.7% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Japan amounted to +166.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hong Kong SAR (+143.0% per year) and Malaysia (-5.1% per year).
In value terms, Japan ($X) remains the key foreign market for asparagus exports from South Korea, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hong Kong SAR ($X), with a 6% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Japan totaled +220.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hong Kong SAR (+257.1% per year) and Malaysia (-2.5% per year).

In 2022, the average asparagus export price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 75%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Japan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR (+47.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Republic of Korea
In 2022, the amount of asparagus imported into South Korea contracted to X tons, reducing by -10.5% compared with 2021 figures. In general, imports, however, posted a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, asparagus imports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 37% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
Imports by Country
Mexico (X tons), Peru (X tons) and Australia (X tons) were the main suppliers of asparagus imports to South Korea, together accounting for 81% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mexico (with a CAGR of +28.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Peru ($X), Mexico ($X) and Thailand ($X) constituted the largest asparagus suppliers to South Korea, with a combined 81% share of total imports.
Among the main suppliers, Mexico, with a CAGR of +29.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average asparagus import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 3.2% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average import price increased by 9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while the price for Mexico ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+5.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
