In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the South Korean electronic chip market, when its value decreased by -46.3% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a perceptible expansion. In value terms, electronic chip exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 65% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

China (X units), Hong Kong SAR (X units) and Vietnam (X units) were the main destinations of electronic chip exports from South Korea, together comprising 71% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +43.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for electronic chip exported from South Korea were China ($X), Hong Kong SAR ($X) and Vietnam ($X), together comprising 77% of total exports.

Vietnam, with a CAGR of +22.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average electronic chip export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, picking up by 14% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a perceptible setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 82%. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to the Philippines ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Japan (-1.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2021, overseas purchases of electronic chips increased by 29% to X units for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a abrupt slump. Imports peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, electronic chip imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +80.7% against 2013 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
