In 2021, overseas purchases of chlorides and chloride oxides of phosphorus and halides and halide-oxides of non-metals increased by 16% to X tons, rising for the fifth year in a row after four years of decline. Overall, imports, however, recorded a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, imports of chlorides and chloride oxides of phosphorus and halides and halide-oxides of non-metals expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a pronounced slump. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest chlorides and phosphorus oxychloride and halides supplier to South Korea, with a 72% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of chlorides and chloride oxides of phosphorus and halides and halide-oxides of non-metals from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), sixfold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at -4.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+8.1% per year) and Germany (-0.7% per year).
In value terms, the largest chlorides and phosphorus oxychloride and halides suppliers to South Korea were China ($X), Japan ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 80% share of total imports. India lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 4.9%.
India, with a CAGR of +12.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
