In 2021, heat pump imports into South Korea expanded notably to X units, with an increase of 8.3% against the previous year's figure. Overall, imports saw resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 114%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In 2021, Japan (X units) was the main supplier of heat pump to South Korea, accounting for a 107% share of total imports. Moreover, heat pump imports from Japan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X units), threefold. The United Arab Emirates (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Japan amounted to +2.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-10.0% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+267.4% per year).

In value terms, Japan ($X) constituted the largest supplier of heat pumps (other than air conditioning machines) to South Korea, comprising 101% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 31% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Japan totaled -2.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-4.8% per year) and Germany (-8.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average heat pump import price amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 7.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Iceland ($X per unit), while the price for Australia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+37.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
