Maize Market Size in Republic of Korea

In 2022, the South Korean maize market increased by 25% to $X, rising for the fifth year in a row after three years of decline. In 2022, overseas shipments of maize increased by 4,743% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports showed significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 22,612% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, maize exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 16,747% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Vietnam (X tons) was the main destination for maize exports from South Korea, accounting for a 99% share of total exports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (X kg), with less than 0.1% share of total exports.

In value terms, Argentina ($X) constituted the largest supplier of maize to South Korea, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brazil ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Argentina stood at +19.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (+1.8% per year) and the United States (-4.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average maize import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 31% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, maize import price increased by +78.0% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 36%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Romania ($X per ton) and the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Brazil ($X per ton) and Argentina ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+2.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
