The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 12%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, non-cellular polypropylene film exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

The United States (X tons), Japan (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main destinations of non-cellular polypropylene film exports from South Korea, with a combined 31% share of total exports. These countries were followed by India, Mexico, Germany, Vietnam, Thailand, Turkey, Russia, Australia, Canada and Malaysia, which together accounted for a further 26%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Malaysia (with a CAGR of +16.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for non-cellular polypropylene film exported from South Korea were the United States ($X), Japan ($X) and China ($X), with a combined 33% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Germany, Mexico, Vietnam, India, Thailand, Malaysia, Turkey, Russia, Australia and Canada, which together accounted for a further 26%.

Malaysia, with a CAGR of +17.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average non-cellular polypropylene film export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 9.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (+2.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of non-cellular polypropylene films, sheets, foil and strip decreased by -7% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a mild decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-cellular polypropylene film imports declined to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 17%. Imports peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of non-cellular polypropylene film to South Korea, with a 29% share of total imports. Moreover, non-cellular polypropylene film imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Japan (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by India (X tons), with an 8.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at -4.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (+1.8% per year) and India (+50.2% per year).

In value terms, Japan ($X), China ($X) and India ($X) were the largest non-cellular polypropylene film suppliers to South Korea, with a combined 61% share of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, India, with a CAGR of +47.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

The average non-cellular polypropylene film import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 4.6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 14% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the price for Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
