The South Korean paint and varnish market shrank slightly to $X in 2022, waning by -3.7% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, posted strong growth. Paint and varnish consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to China totaled +2.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (+9.6% per year) and the United States (+13.0% per year).

In 2022, the average paint and varnish export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 5.5% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 16% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Mongolia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of paints and varnishes, when their volume decreased by -16.5% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 27%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, paint and varnish imports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 15% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced in the following year.
