Strawberry Market Size in Republic of Korea

The South Korean strawberry market dropped to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -5.3% against the previous year. Overall, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the strawberry harvested area in South Korea shrank slightly to X ha, which is down by -3.5% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to strawberry production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

For the third consecutive year, South Korea recorded decline in overseas shipments of strawberries, which decreased by -17.9% to X tons in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -28.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 35%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, strawberry exports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Exports by Country

Hong Kong SAR (X tons), Singapore (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) were the main destinations of strawberry exports from South Korea, with a combined 68% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +105.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X), Singapore ($X) and Vietnam ($X) constituted the largest markets for strawberry exported from South Korea worldwide, with a combined 64% share of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +110.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average strawberry export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, strawberry export price increased by +71.4% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Indonesia (+5.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Republic of Korea

In 2022, overseas purchases of strawberries were finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. Overall, imports, however, saw a drastic downturn. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, strawberry imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible slump. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Egypt (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of strawberry to South Korea, with a 79% share of total imports. Moreover, strawberry imports from Egypt exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Lithuania (X tons), eightfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Egypt totaled +6.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Lithuania (0.0% per year) and South Africa (0.0% per year).

In value terms, the largest strawberry suppliers to South Korea were Egypt ($X), Lithuania ($X) and South Africa ($X), with a combined 66% share of total imports.

Egypt, with a CAGR of +3.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average strawberry import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -23.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a notable expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average import price increased by 132%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Lithuania ($X per ton), while the price for Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+95.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
