Sugar Market Size in Republic of Korea

For the tenth consecutive year, the South Korean sugar market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 19% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption showed a strong increase. As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports from Republic of Korea

In 2021, sugar exports from South Korea contracted to X tons, which is down by -14.1% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 9.9% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sugar exports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Exports by Country

China (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons) and Singapore (X tons) were the main destinations of sugar exports from South Korea, with a combined 92% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Singapore (with a CAGR of +37.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, the largest markets for sugar exported from South Korea were China ($X), Hong Kong SAR ($X) and Japan ($X), with a combined 90% share of total exports. Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 5.7%.

Among the main countries of destination, Singapore, with a CAGR of +31.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Export Prices by Country

The average sugar export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 24% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a noticeable decline. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (+5.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Sugar Imports

Imports into Republic of Korea

For the tenth year in a row, South Korea recorded growth in supplies from abroad of sugar, which increased by 7.9% to X tons in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +80.3% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 8.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, sugar imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a remarkable increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Australia (X tons) constituted the largest sugar supplier to South Korea, with a 57% share of total imports. Moreover, sugar imports from Australia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Guatemala (X tons), twofold. Thailand (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Australia totaled +7.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Guatemala (+13.3% per year) and Thailand (-2.6% per year).

In value terms, Australia ($X), Thailand ($X) and Guatemala ($X) constituted the largest sugar suppliers to South Korea, with a combined 97% share of total imports. These countries were followed by El Salvador, which accounted for a further 1.2%.

In terms of the main suppliers, El Salvador, with a CAGR of +21.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average sugar import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 9.6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.7%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while the price for Guatemala ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+14.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
