Moldova (X tons) was the main destination for anti-freezing preparations exports from Romania, accounting for a 24% share of total exports. Moreover, anti-freezing preparations exports to Moldova exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Ukraine (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Bulgaria (X tons), with an 8.9% share.

In 2021, overseas purchases of anti-freezing preparations and prepared de-icing fluids decreased by -10.9% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, anti-freezing preparations imports reduced slightly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a temperate expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 37%. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Hungary (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of anti-freezing preparations to Romania, with a 41% share of total imports. Moreover, anti-freezing preparations imports from Hungary exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), threefold. Belgium (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Hungary amounted to +10.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+1.5% per year) and Belgium (+2.7% per year).

In value terms, Hungary ($X), Germany ($X) and Belgium ($X) constituted the largest anti-freezing preparations suppliers to Romania, together comprising 64% of total imports. Slovakia, Austria, Poland, the Czech Republic, Italy and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.

Among the main suppliers, Slovakia, with a CAGR of +58.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average anti-freezing preparations import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 35% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+9.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
