Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, apple exports shrank remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports faced a sharp reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 88%. The exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Hungary (X tons) was the main destination for apple exports from Romania, with a 73% share of total exports. Moreover, apple exports to Hungary exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Poland (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Germany (X tons), with a 5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Hungary amounted to -30.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (+13.7% per year) and Germany (-41.9% per year).
In value terms, Hungary ($X) remains the key foreign market for apples exports from Romania, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the UK ($X), with a 5.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Poland, with a 5.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Hungary totaled -25.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+47.8% per year) and Poland (+9.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average apple export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 60% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, apple export price increased by +104.9% against 2019 indices. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hungary (+7.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Romania
In 2021, approx. X tons of apples were imported into Romania; flattening at the previous year. In general, total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -19.4% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 30% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, apple imports declined to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 49% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

In 2021, Poland (X tons) constituted the largest apple supplier to Romania, with a 73% share of total imports. Moreover, apple imports from Poland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Germany (X tons), with a 5.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Poland totaled +17.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (-13.7% per year) and Germany (+3.4% per year).
In value terms, Poland ($X) constituted the largest supplier of apples to Romania, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with an 8.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 7.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Poland stood at +24.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+9.1% per year) and Italy (-8.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average apple import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -7.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, apple import price increased by +60.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 73% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for North Macedonia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Moldova (+8.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
