Banana Market Size in Romania

The Romanian banana market contracted to $X in 2022, falling by -7.8% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, consumption, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. Banana consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In 2022, shipments abroad of bananas decreased by -25.7% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, showed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 203,333% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then dropped notably in the following year.

In value terms, banana exports declined remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 399,700%. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank notably in the following year.

Hungary (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons) and Croatia (X tons) were the main destinations of banana exports from Romania, together accounting for 89% of total exports. Moldova, Poland and Slovenia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 10%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Moldova (with a CAGR of +4,285.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average banana export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 7.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 97%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Moldova ($X per ton) and Croatia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland ($X per ton) and Slovenia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Croatia (+5.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

After eight years of growth, supplies from abroad of bananas decreased by -13.4% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 49% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, banana imports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 55% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

Germany (X tons), Costa Rica (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main suppliers of banana imports to Romania, with a combined 47% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Costa Rica (with a CAGR of +62.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Costa Rica ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) were the largest banana suppliers to Romania, together accounting for 46% of total imports.

Costa Rica, with a CAGR of +64.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Bulgaria ($X per ton), while the price for Ecuador ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ecuador (+3.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
